Welcome to open water swimming!

…the open water was once the province of only sailors and fishermen, it now offers a strong allure to swimmers of all ages, abilities and backgrounds – Steven Munatones

Channels, lakes, rivers and bays are fully embraced by those swimmers wanting something different to the enclosed space of a swimming pool. Millions of swimmers are heading to the open water to experience the challenges it offers.

Not just for elite swimmers or triathletes

Open water swimming can just be for pleasure, fitness or competition. Swimmers of all abilities can enjoy the open water and with new types of open water swimming being offered each year, there truly is an open water experience for everyone.

Braving the elements or finding peace, the allure of open water swimming is captivating

Get started with some expert technical coaching, we have regular level 1 and 2 pool based courses running to get you ready for the open ocean. For a truly special experience join our sessions at Bude Sea Pool where you can learn the swimming techniques as well as embracing the challenges of the open water environment.

Go for it!

When you’re ready, join a group of open water swimmers or a coached session and just go for it! Open water swimmers are a fantastic bunch of people and you’ll soon appreciate there’s a comfort and safety in numbers. We have regular coached open water swims running all summer and love to welcome new swimmers to the group

Expect the unexpected…

The reality of open water is that unexpected things often happen. Whether that’s a malfunctioning pair of goggles, an unexpected rain shower, the wind a bit stronger than expected or a visit from a porpoise! Some things you just can’t train for and that’s one of the allures for many of our swimmers.

Come and give it a go and one of our sessions. We have regular open water lessons running at Bude Sea Pool, Barnstaple leisure centre (for technical pool based sessions) and in the open water around Westward Ho. If you’d like to come along please get in touch.

We look forward to welcoming you soon.
